ENG 162 ARGUMENTATION AND SECONDARY RESEARCH

PAPER #3.1: ARGUMENTATION AND SECONDARY RESEARCH

LENGTH: 1000 WORDS, minimum

Include MLA style Title and Works Cited / Bibliography pages

*worth 20% of your Final Grade

The primary focus of this paper is a researched argument. You are to research a topic of your choice, with my permission, and write a paper that demonstrates both your understanding of the subject as well as the depth and quality of your research. The paper should show that you have researched a college-level topic thoroughly, have gathered solid and useful information from a variety of sources, have organized this information so that the paper will flow logically and fluidly, utilized borrowed information smoothly into the draft to prove your claims and show evidence of research, and use MLA format to correctly acknowledge all borrowed information, both in the paper and on the Works Cited / Bibliography page. This is where the bulk of your grade will come from.

You must have at least 10 academic sources in your Works Cited / Bibliography page, and you must provide quotes from half (5) of them in Paper #3.1. Similar to the other papers in this course, you should aim for multiple quotes (from multiple sources) per body section. 3 of your sources can be from From Inquiry to Academic Writing (if you choose a subject from the book), but the majority must be from other books or peer-reviewed journals. You may use 1 website, but it must be of academic standing (with the URL most likely ending in “.edu,” “.org,” or “.gov”). Again, Wikipedia is not an academic source. We will be completing the “Library Research Toolkit” to help us navigate our way through the sources that the library has to offer. If you are ever confused, please contact me on Canvas or schedule an appointment with a research librarian as they are tremendously helpful

You do not have to use From Inquiry to Academic Writing as the basis for your research topic. You may choose any college-level topic to research as long as you have my permission to do so. This paper is both informative and argumentative, so you should have sources that provide ample support. Even if your paper is not explicitly about the subjects in From Inquiry to Academic Writing, you might find a way to tie the texts into your paper in order to acquire an easy source; you will have to be the one to find a way to make sure the reading(s) from the text fits whatever topic you are writing about.

ENG 162 ARGUMENTATION AND SECONDARY RESEARCH

The paper assignment is broken into tasks in order to create a logical course of action and direction from first ideas to finished product. To make sure that progress is being done, there are tasks and work due throughout the entire research process. The points given for these tasks comprise part of your Class Work / Homework grade and are given only in an all-or-nothing manner, meaning that half-completed or incorrectly done tasks will receive no points. If, for instance, you have 8 bib cards done and not 10, you will receive zero points, not eight.

Paper #3.1: Tasks, Explanations, and Point Values:

Tentative thesis (10 points):   This is your one-sentence statement that reflects the intent and direction you’ve chosen for your paper’s focus. This is a tentative thesis, so it can change; however, this should be as close to the actual thesis as you can make it.

10 “note cards” (20 points):   This is a list of 10 quotes that you plan to use for the paper. You need 1 quote from at least 5 of your 10 sources (the 10 sources will comprise your Works Cited / Bibliography page). The entries MUST follow ALL MLA convention and be done correctly in order for the points to be awarded.

Paper abstract (20 points):   This is a summary of your paper’s intention, focus, and purpose. This abstract is written in complete sentence form and is one paragraph long. Let me know why you are writing, what you hope to learn, what specific questions you intend to answer, and all that you hope to accomplish in the paper.

Outline (20 points):   This is an informal outline, which will allow you to demonstrate your paper’s structure and support system. An outline makes your pre-drafting much more productive by allowing you to move ideas around and re-organize before you actually begin to write. Format: A 1 a b 2 a b; B 1 a b 2 a b, etc.

Paper #3.1 (100 points / worth 20 % of your Final Grade): This is your finished product. It should reflect the weeks of work spent on it and show adequate development of the qualities mentioned in the first paragraph above. These are the things I look for when grading the paper, so it’s vital to show me that you have all of these qualities and that they are done correctly.
