ENG122 Ethnography Literature Review
A literature review involves reading and analyzing the existing writing and research on a subject as a part of your own research process. There can be many goals/objectives behind a literature review – to understand the existing research, to criticize it, etc. – but our purposes will be rather straightforward; you will examine existing knowledge on your subject to inform and guide your research.
The first paragraph in your review should present the subject of your study, and what issues related to this subject, you intend to explore. You are then to select three existing literature about your subculture (ideally, ones that relate to the issues you wish to explore in your research) or created by your subculture. For each piece of literature, you are to provide the following.
- Article title and authors.
- A summary of the article that includes specific data, information, and conclusions presented in the piece.
- Ideas the article gives you about your research subject. This should include questions the piece leaves you with that you might want to explore in field research and interviews.
- An explanation of how this article’s content and conclusions compare to your existing assumptions about your subculture. Are your thoughts confirmed? Contradicted? How?
- An explanation of how the findings or content in this article compares to those in your other articles. Are there similar themes you notice? Connections between this and the other pieces? See the “synthesis matrix” handout for help in this process.
The end of your document should provide an APA reference page that lists the information for all the articles included in the review.
