ENGL 275 Paper Two Assignment Use the Freudian or the Jungian/archetypal approach to interpret and analyze any story from
Phil Klay’s short story collection Redeployment.
–Your paper should have a thesis (based on either Freud or Jung) and should support that
thesis with a detailed analysis of textual detail that uses key terms from both Freud or Jung AND
Formalism.
Suggested Organization
1) Introduction—briefly introduce your topic (the title and a 2-3 sentence summary of the
text you’re writing about), your key theoretical approach (Freudian or Jungian concepts)
and thesis (your interpretation of the story in terms of your chosen critical approach)
2) 1 st 3 body paragraphs:
a. Introduce and explain your approach of choice—Freud or Jung—make sure you
explain key terms and how they work in literary interpretation; feel free to throw in
a brief example or two from everyday life, movies, etc.

3) Next 4 paragraphs:
a. Analyze the Klay story you have chosen using the analytical tools discussed in
part 2a
b. Make sure each body paragraph analyzes a specific passage and explains how
that analysis supports your thesis. Each body paragraph should include:
i. A clear topic sentence that is related to your overall thesis
ii. Analysis of the passage. Use the passage analysis method:
situate/summarize, analyze, connect (see Lesson 2A for more detail on
the passage analysis method)

4) Conclusion
a. Briefly reiterate the overall points of your argument and consider the
effectiveness of your chosen critical approach
