Thesis : Daisy married Tom Buchanan instead of Jay Gatsby. This pressured decision alone is dictative of the rest of her life as well as the most important one she will ever make.

For this is what the society in America was set upon : women’s delicacy and need to be cared for. Hence the well worded term “house wife”. A married woman, lacking any other feasible career option, financially and mentally bound to a kitchen and house. Unless that is, she married well enough to have staff do the chores themselves. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby , focused on this situation, inspects the marriages of the rich elite in New York City. Unsurprisingly, the real higher ups of this society are the men. Fitzgerald amplifies American ideals throughout his novel as all the women are illustrated as femine objects meant to sit as trophies and possessions belonging to their husbands. They lack any essential power or decision making unrelated to that of marriage to a man. Additionally, this decison will entail the type of life the woman will set out tolive as she does not have her own career and belongs to soly her husband. However, this logic and sexist dependence proves to be an issue for the characters of The Great Gatsby due to the decision of who to marry being ectremely pressured by societal norms, financial security, and
