FMST 485 Final Paper

Assignment Goals:

  1. The overall goal of the final paper is to teach students how to write a literature review to support a hypothesis on a topic of their selection.
  2. Students will learn to focus on investigating a research question related to the field of family studies.
  3. Students will demonstrate their learning from throughout the semester using examples from the text and supplemental readings.

Assignment:

Each student must complete a final paper, which represents a synthesis of his or her learning throughout the semester. Minimum page limit: 6 pages            Maximum page limit: 12 pages

The final paper is a literature review that supports a research question. The instructor is more than willing to review drafts of the final paper (or completed sections) and provide feedback to the student. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with the instructor, during office hours, to review and receive feedback regarding his or her draft. Keep in mind that during the last two weeks of the semester, the instructor is not able to review entire papers. However, you can meet with your instructor to review specific sections and answer questions at any time during the semester.

The final paper should follow the format identified on this assignment sheet. Headings and subheadings (according to APA style) are required. Your paper should not be written in outline form – this is only used for the assignment instructions.

APA style for student papers should be used. Your paper should contain the following information:

  • Introduction and Statement of the Problem (about 1 page)
    1. Students should briefly introduce their topic and state the social problem to be studied. Students should discuss how this is of importance to the field of family studies and to society. Your instructor will approve your topic during the first few weeks of the semester.
    2. Students should use empirical evidence from the literature to support the need for study in this topic area.
      1. Some helpful hints for citing evidence:
        • discuss the impact of the issue (how many people are affected, how are they affected)
        • provide statistics or other epidemiological information to support your argument.

  • Literature Review (about 3-5 pages)
    1. Students are expected to write a literature review that includes at least 8 empirical research articles from professional journals (must be peer-reviewed and discuss original research). These articles must be referenced in the text of the final paper to be counted towards your grade. Students may use articles from their annotated bibliographies in their literature review, if they are related to the topic. Students may review additional articles to support their ideas.
    2. When writing this section of the paper, students should begin by describing their search methodology including terms used to search and how they chose the articles for the review (about 1 paragraph).
    3. Students should not summarize each consecutive article, but should integrate the selected articles using common themes and threads to tie them together. Students should demonstrate critical thought pertaining to the articles chosen and demonstrate the need for further research.
    4. If theory has been used in previous research, a theoretical basis for the hypothesis should be presented.
    5. Any gaps in the current research or empirical questions that still exist should be discussed.
    6. Students must cite all sources used for the literature review. There should be many citations throughout this first section of the research paper.
    7. Students must reference all citations (quotes and paraphrased material) and articles used in the text. Students must also list all sources used in the paper on the final reference page, following strict APA style. Students must turn in copies of their articles with their final paper. Note – these copies do not need to be ‘clean copies’.

  • Research Hypothesis (about .5 to 1 page)
    1. Students should clearly identify their research question and/or hypothesis statement. Students should clearly identify the independent and dependent variables in their study. The hypothesis should be based in the literature and clearly relate to the introduction/statement of the problem.
    2. Students should suggest that their study provides needed evidence for the population and issue being examined.
