Assignment 1:
Individual Presentation
• June 1 (Monday) & 3 (Tuesday), 2020
• Individual Presentation (via Microsoft Teams)
• Choose a Foreign Policy topic of your choice and
critically analyze the issue
• Please email me your proposed topic before May 3rd
• Topics will be accepted on a ‘first-come-first-served’
basis
– No overlaps in topics allowed

Format
• 10-15 mins oral presentation per person,
followed by 5 mins Q&A
• Be prepared to be able to answer any
questions for Q&A

Issues to address
• Brief background to the issue
• What is at stake for the countries involved?
– Identify national interests (economic, defense,
political, cultural, etc)
• What are the challenges faced by countries
involved?
• What are the broader implications (if any) of
this FP issue?
• Conclusion: what are the future prospects?

• 40 % of your final grade
• Demonstration of key events, resolutions and
treaties (if any)
• Application of relevant theories and concepts
in Foreign Policy Analysis
• Critical assessment of issues/ ability to
examine things from various perspectives
• How well you present and respond to answers

Essay
• Submission date: May 31, 2020 (Sunday) via email
• 40% of final grade
• Select a topic from the options provided
• 3000 words
• Ensure to adhere to ‘proper’ academic writing style,
as per instructed in ‘Research Methodology’ course

• Choose one of the following:
• A) Critically analyze how resource and capabilities of
a nation impact their foreign policy tools.
OR
• B) Select 3 variables from the following: public
opinion; lobby/interest groups; bureaucracy; political
parties; leader’s personality & belief; regime style.
Critically evaluate how each factor affects the
foreign policy decision making process.
