Read Chapter One, “From Augustus to Tiberius” of Tacitus’ work, The Annals of Imperial Rome and write a three-page, double-spaced paper discussing the following:
1. First, examine the general facts relating to the document: What is this, where and when does it come from, who wrote it, who was the intended audience and why was it written? Also, briefly describe what is taking place in the document. How does Tacitus describe Caesar Augustus? How does he describe Tiberius?
2. Second, examine the usefulness of the document: What is the reliability of the document? What are the attitudes, presuppositions, and biases? What is Tacitus’ attitude toward Caesar Augustus? What is his attitude toward Tiberius? Are there any inconsistencies in the document? And determine whether the document is useful for historians.
