Assignment Description: You will complete one, double-spaced, 4-5 page paper that conforms to the assignment descriptions below.

Thesis Construction
In the second short paper, you will construct and advance a specific thesis that either affirms or negates the thesis or a historical claim consideration in the first paper. For example, if the historical thesis that “The United States is a nation founded on both an ideal and a lie (p. 16)”, you will want to construct a thesis that argues for why you affirm or negate that proposition.
Once you have constructed a thesis, you will be well served thinking about main parts about an historical interpretation or argument: what is the claim (argument), the data (evidence), and the sufficient authority [or the power behind] of evidence (that is, why the evidence supports your thesis or claim), and the important of the claim (answer the “who cares/why does this matter?” question). You should develop 2-4 claims that support your thesis. Then, you should use at least one piece of data to support each claim. Most importantly, you should sufficiently show how the data supports the claim, and then also how each claim supports the thesis. Your paper should be similar to a five-paragraph essay like you learned in high school:

You must use at least three pieces of evidence from sources you find in GSC’s library, using their databases, or those that include a URL ending with “.gov” (or .gov plus the abbreviation of another country like “.au” or “.mx”). Scholarly journal articles are the best types of evidence for this paper, although news sources can be useful as well. At least one of your sources must include a scholarly journal.
As in the first paper, you should apply theories, concepts, and facts from the course. This time, however, the application should be implicit rather than explicit: instead of writing about a thesis and its surrounding debates (as was done in SP1), your use of them should be evident in the application. Keep in mind that your goal here is to convince an impartial but critical reader to accept your position, and select and develop your historical arguments accordingly.

Grading:
Your papers should each be well-written, coherent, and without grammar, spelling, or sentence structure errors. Do NOT turn in more (or less) than designated page limit. You should also cite your sources both in the text and in a reference page (this does not count in the page limit) using proper citation Style. If you have trouble with style, you should consult the web (a standard webpage for all collegiate level writing is the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (“the Purdue OWL”) found at https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html. Style will comprise 30% of your grade for each of the short papers.
Your paper should be 4-5 pages, double-spaced, in Times New Roman font.
Your content will comprise the remaining 70% of your paper grade. Your papers should be logically sound, and they should clearly conform to the assignment requirements. Failure to do what you’ve been asked to do will not result in a very good grade. You are encouraged, however to be creative and innovative in the way you respond to each assignment. Creativity, if done well and with purpose, will likely be rewarded. Excellent papers that simply evidence a mastery of the material and argumentation without doing anything especially innovative or creative, will also likely be rewarded.
