HSCE 3010 ASSIGNMENT 5
HSCE 3010 ASSIGNMENT #5: Pulling it together with the Research Abstract (worth 15% of final grade)
Please note you are NOT required to submit in the discussion forum or provide peer feedback. However you are welcome to do so if you so wish.
The word count for this assignment is 500 words (not including references).
What is an abstract?
An abstract is NOT an outline of a longer research proposal. The outline is commonly used to guide the writing of the paper. An abstract highlights all the key pieces associated with your study. It could be considered a mini research paper.
There are two types of abstracts that are commonly used in research:
- The abstract that accompanies a full length paper for submission into a journal
- The abstract that is a standalone, usually submitted at an academic conference. The
former has the advantage of filling in the gaps while the latter really has to stand by itself as the study may not have been executed as is the case with your assignment. As such, you will not have any results or conclusions to report.
For this assignment we ask you to focus on the following areas: Introduction, Background & Statement of Problem, Methods, Ethical Issues/Study Limitations, Population sample, exclusion/inclusion criteria and data analysis. If you use these headers while preparing the abstract, please be sure to remove them prior to submitting your assignment.
Do note, this assignment will borrow from all of your previous assignments. The only new information you will be presenting in this assignment is in relation to your sample.

You should try to balance the abstract so it covers all aspects requested in the rubric below. As well, please be sure to incorporate any comments that were made in previous assignments if you haven’t done so already.
