Research Paper Instructions
Even though you are going to focus on a work to write about, you should begin by choosing a person from the list provided on Canvas. It may be someone we talked about or maybe just someone mentioned in the book that we didn’t talk about in class. Be sure to glance ahead at the names in the chapters we have yet to cover. The list includes the Chapters we covered in this class beginning with CH 27.
Chose a person, then a creation: From the list, choose a visual artist, author, choreographer/dancer, architect, or composer/ performer and find one or two of this person’s works to research and write about. Please do not choose a political figure or a someone in the sciences. (No Darwin or Marx, for example.) The focus of the paper is going to be on the WORK, not on the person, and you are going to include your own analysis as well as what you have found in your research. If you choose to write about just one work, it may not be the same work we covered in class discussion or in a powerpoint. If you choose two works, one of them may be the same as one mentioned in class.

Why would you choose one or two works? Two architectural structures, or two works of visual art that are closely related are examples of creative works where you might want to choose two instead of one based on how many good sources of information you can find. If you choose something famous, (and I can help you with that) you will likely need to choose only one and will find enough research on it. I do not recommend two poems or two pieces of music! Your paper will either be way too superficial or way to complicated and long and you will drown in it.
What if you can’t find research on your exact painting? Or poem? Or ballet? Or musical composition?
Don’t worry. You won’t have any problem with the biographical research or research into the style, era, movement, etc. You can then provide your own observation and analysis of the work you chose based on what you read and know about that movement and style and how it seems to fit in that movement or style. You have been doing that all semester- talking about general and talking about details, saying “Why” and “So What?”
In place of specific information on a piece, you may find research on one of the artist’s more famous pieces that we looked at in class and you can use that research to help your own writing by saying things like “The critic X , talking about another of Smith’s sculptures, said the material was cold and hard. This sculpture uses the same material and also appears cold and hard, which I think symbolizes……” Apply what you learn from the class and from your research to the object/creation that you have chosen. Your supported and justified opinion on a work is OK!
Choosing Performance: In addition to visual art like a painting, statue, or building you may also choose a performance art like a play, ballet, opera, or concert. You are expected to view what you choose, not just read about it. Many great performances are available on YouTube or from the SCF library. In the past, students have chosen ballets or choreographed dances, or a play. Others have chosen a concert from a composer on the list. The performance must be viewed. You need to include the link at the end of your paper. I need to see the same thing you did. You will cite Time Stamps in your
MLA.

A Word about Music: Writing about music can be a little easier if you have even a little musical background, i.e. if you play any instrument or have sung in a chorus. But certainly anyone can read the research and write a good paper on a musical piece. It is not necessary to include many complex musical terms. You may also write about singer even if his /her songs aren’t written by him/her. This person chooses the songs and styles them the way they want. Students have written great papers on the music of Louis Armstrong, Billy Holiday, and Bessie Smith (Jazz and Blues)
Choosing literature: Do NOT write about literature that is more than 20 pages because you need to actually READ the work for your research paper and include a copy of the work for me. If you choose a short short story or a poem, you should provide a copy of the work with your paper (a poem can be copied and pasted at the end of your paper) or in the case of something longer that is in a pdf, you can provide the online link at the end of your paper. I need to see the same thing that you used to write your paper. Failure to do so will result in a late paper while I wait for access to the work. You may NOT use a paper that was used or even heavily modified from another class. Tip: When writing about literature, you will actually need to take quotes from the literature as proof. Example- Adrian uses harsh and ugly words like “pus” (9), “squirm” (10) and “puke” (16) to emphasize the raw and unglamorous reality of modern war

Your paper of 1200 words (4-5 pages of text with standard 1 inch margins, double spaced, and 12 point Times New Roman font, not including the Works Cited page) should include, in whatever order works best for your plan:
- A very brief bioof the artist. For example, when and where they lived, the influences on their lives that made them artists/composers/etc. Select things that happened in their life that impacts the work or style. Consider only the information that has an influence on the work you are discussing. No one cares about a complete childhood history or his/her parents’ names. Include information that informed the work of the person. If having a strict father did not impact the artist, don’t include it. If being an orphan and a lonely child DID influence the work of the artist, then DO include it. If the artist left France and moved to China and that was important, include it. If the artist left New York and moved to Los Angeles and it didn’t matter, don’t include it. Students sometimes write too much about this (because it is the easy part) but that will hurt your grade. This is NOT a paper about an artist. It is about the WORK.
- A detailed discussion of the movement and/or style with which the work is associated and how the work fits within that movement or style and how it shows the characteristics of that movement (Modernist, Romanticism, Realism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, Primitivism, Exoticism, Orientalism etc. Please note each of our chapters is not necessarily the name of a movement.)
- Connected to the bullet above, how the work fits in a historical context. What was going on in the culture or society that impacted this work?
- Any political, social, spiritual, philosophical, value or other commentary made by the work
- This point should be at least HALF your paper! A detailed descriptive analysis of the work itself connecting form (what it looks like and how it is put together) and meaning (what it means and how the form helps determine that meaning.) Look at the formal aspects of the work- if it’s a painting, exactly what it looks like- color, light, composition, etc. If it’s a poem or play, its structure, word choice, theme, etc. Connect the form to the meaning. ,,,, HUM 2250 Research Paper
A ) When you describe something, come to some conclusion about it: “The face of the woman is broken in many pieces. This could represent……”
B) Also, the opposite- When you say what something means, be sure to include the characteristics of it that led you to that conclusion: “This poem is about how modern life is treating humans like machines. In line 11, “the grinding footsteps, the blank faces” indicate a robot-like humanity. ” You may find an analysis in your research. You may include what experts say, but I want you to add to it. You, too, are allowed to interpret!
- Use at least 4 authoritative sources and include in-text citation and a Works Cited page at the end, MLA 8th editionformat. Any Internet source must be expert and reliable. A museum website is a good source, as is a university, as long as you are not looking at student work! Online newspapers and online versions of print magazines are also acceptable. A few other websites, such as “The Art Story” are also acceptable especially for general information. If you click “About Us” you can read the credentials of the author and decide if it is a valid site. If you aren’t sure, check with me or a librarian. Additionally, at least 1 of your sources must be from an academic journal from our library database.Absolutely no Wikipedia, blogs, online tutoring services, or “Study note” websites. The textbook is not one of your 4 sources. Do not use the textbook as a source. Refer to your ENC 1101 handbook on MLA or visit the library or Writing Center for MLA and citation assistance. What is on your Works Cited page needs to match with your in-text citations.
- You need to include an image, the text, or a link to the creative work you are analyzing. If you have an image, it should be at the end of your paper BEFORE the Works Cited page. If you are analyzing a performance art, you can put the link to the online performance in the Works Cited page, or the Works Cited entry to the video in the SCF library. If you are doing a short story, talk to me and we’ll find the best way to get me the file BY THE DUE DATE.
Does writing count? Uh. Yes. Please proofread well and use the Writing Center if you know you have trouble with grammar and sentence skills. Any images should be only at the end of the paper. Do not scatter images throughout your paper.
Do not use first person (I, my, me) in this paper. However, you MAY include your own ideas and conclusions. The proper way to include personal opinion without using “I” is like this:
“Still today, many families enjoy a picnic by the sea or in a park, and that makes Smith’s work of one hundred years ago very relatable.”
When including your own opinion, use “hedge” words to indicate it is not a fact, but your opinion. These include works like perhaps, maybe, could, may, might. For example:
“The light sound of the violins in the piece could refer to the birds in the garden that Morrison enjoyed so much.”
“It is possible the abuse she suffered in her marriage allowed her to feel the blues more deeply and the sadness comes out in her voice.”

Submitting the paper: This paper will be submitted through TurnItin.com in a dropbox on our Canvas course page. It will not be accepted in any other manner. This dropbox only takes one file per student, so you can’t upload a paper and a separate image, for example. No cover page is needed. I encourage you to start on this early, get research assistance from the library, and writing assistance, if needed, from the Writing Center in the ARC. I am also happy to preview your paper with you prior to the deadline.
