Part Two: Short Essay One Essay One
• Select an additional need and describe the potential impact on a child. (500 words)
• Discuss the benefits of inclusion for the child, his/her family and the teachers. (500 words)
• Outline a plan for the child’s inclusion that also takes into account the environment and other children at the
centre. Justify your decision-making in light of equity and social justice. (500 words)
LO1, LO2, LO3 (1500 words)
A brief introduction and conclusion are necessary for this essay. There are three parts to the body. Firstly select a diverse need, such as those described in section two of the course guide. So as not to confuse social issues with diverse/additional needs, your choice should be a physical or developmental need. Then with reference to literature describe how the diverse/additional need may influence the child’s learning and development. Secondly, be deliberate in your discussion of the benefits of inclusion for the child with your selected need, his/her family and teachers. You can discuss each separately or synthesise. For the third part, prepare a plan to support the child with your selected need as per your discussion in part one. Your discussion should include teaching strategies that a teacher could use to build inclusive attitudes and practices for the child and their family. Support your plan in terms of why these particular strategies would be effective and how they are reflective of equity and social justice. Your response must reflect your in-depth engagement with key literature. Although the tasks say ‘you/r’, the essay is not a personal recount. The ‘you’ refers to you as a teacher, so your lens in the essay is from a teaching point of view. Do not select a specific child at your centre and personify them in the essay. It isn’t about a specific child, rather the specific need.
Part Three: Short Essay Two
A child, whose family has recently immigrated to New Zealand, arrives at your early childhood centre with limited English language.
Suggest a range of strategies you will implement to begin the process of supporting the child’s learning of English as an additional language, while attending to the child’s sense of belonging and wellbeing. Justify your strategies by drawing on literature about cultural responsiveness, intercultural pedagogy and critical multiculturalism.
LO3, LO4 (1000 words)
A brief introduction and conclusion are necessary for this essay. With reference to key literature, consider a range of teaching strategies that will support the child’s acquisition of English as an additional language, approximately three to five should be sufficient. These strategies must be supportive of the child’s sense of belonging and well-being and empower both the child and his/her family. This discussion should also draw on literature that is cognisant of key concepts including cultural responsiveness, intercultural pedagogy and critical multiculturalism. Your essay must be supported by a range of literature from the course readings and beyond including professional discourse and curriculum. Similar to the first essay, avoid personifying a specific child at your centre. Your lens in this essay is from a teaching point of view and not a personal account of your experience with a specific child.
