Introduction to Public Speaking

Persuasive Speech Guidelines

Purpose:

The rhetorical purpose of this speech is to persuade your audience based on a question of fact, value, or policy. Your topic must be controversial and socially relevant. Please choose your topic with care. There must be some disagreement or divergence in opinion associated with your topic. (Refer to off-limit topics on page 2 for topics you are not allowed to use.) If you choose policy, your policy change (to put in place, abolish, modify, or maintain) must be directed at the university, local government, state government, federal government, or international entity. If you choose more of a behavioral policy, consider your classmates your target audience.

Persuasive Speech

Guidelines:

  • Your speech should be 6 to 8 minutes in length. You’ll lose 1 point for each 30-second increment that your speech is less than 6 minutes or more than 8 minutes.
  • Your speech will require considerable research and skillful use of methods of persuasion. Special emphasis should be given to evidence and reasoning. You should verbally cite 5 different sources in your speech, including one scholarly (peer-reviewed) source. In addition to appeals based on logos, your speech should also include appeals based on ethos and pathos, so be sure to consider how you can establish your credibility and involve the audience on an emotional level.
  • Your speech should have a complete introduction, 2-4 main points, and a complete conclusion. Your main points should be developed with a variety of supporting material. Appropriate use of examples, definitions, testimony, statistics, narratives, and/or analogies will help convey your message and persuade the audience.
  • Use a clear organizational pattern that contributes to the strength of your argument. Your book mentions these patterns for policy persuasion: problem-solution, problem-cause-solution, Monroe’s motivated sequence, and comparative advantages. Be sure to use connectives throughout to help your audience follow your speech.
  • Your delivery/speaking outline must adhere to the guidelines discussed in class. (Introduction, transitions, direct quotations, and conclusion may be fully worded. All other main points should be key words to help prompt your memory.)
  • Include source citations within your speaking and preparation outlines.
  • In addition to your content outline (complete with in-text citations), you must turn in a typed Reference page with 5 or more sources listed using APA referencing style.
  • Use an extemporaneous speaking style (aided by your speaking outline)—don’t memorize your speech.
  • Incorporate at least three visual aids into your speech (refer to Ch. 14 for examples). We will discuss this more!
