Case #3 – Evaluating the Cognitive Analytics Frontier
Learning Objectives:
To appraise how machine learning, natural language processing, and cognitive analytic platforms can facilitate access to information in multidimensional datasets leading to the formulation of informed business decisions.
Description:
In the fall of 2014, Chad Kartchner, senior manager of marketing and product management at Honeywell Aerospace (HA), pondered how technology could transform the way aircraft were maintained. The sheer volume of parts and the time-sensitive nature of repairs in the aviation industry made it complicated to identify problems and address them quickly. It was up to Kartchner to identify options that could be used to update HA’s ground-based maintenance system.

Steps:
- Download the Evaluating the Cognitive Analytics Frontier case from Blackboard.
- Read the case and focus upon areas such as…
- the current dynamics and complexities of aircraft maintenance.
- the options Kartchner is currently considering.
- whether there is a catalyst pushing Kartchner to favor one option over another.
- whether the important questions to ask when considering a new technology to solve a critical business decision are being asked by Kartchner.
- Kartchner’s risk analysis of the options; identifying all the pros and cons for each option.
- Write a single page, double-spaced analysis of the case where…
- The first paragraph briefly explains the case.
- In the following paragraphs, explain the options Kartchner is considering at Honeywell. Evaluate the results of Kartchner’s risk analyses, in other words, explain the pros and cons of each option. Can you think of any other options that Kartchner has not consiered?
- In the final paragraph, if you were Chad Kartchner, which option would you recommend for Honeywell and why? This is the most important part of your analysis. Your recommendation should reflect the options you have already discussed in your paper. Clearly state your proposal and provide supporting facts as to why your recommendation should be followed. These facts don’t necessarily have to be stated in the case itself; you may include material learned from outside the class.
- When you finish your paper, return to Blackboard, Week 10, and click on the assignment link
- It is recommended that you close your document, exit Word, and use Firefox to upload your document to Blackboard.
- When you successfully upload your document, you will receive a receipt via email.
- You must submit your case analysis before class next week when we will discuss the case in class.
