Final Take-home Assignment (LANG A332)
Section A (40%) There are FOUR questions in total. All are compulsory and carry equal weighting. Write no more than 200 words for each question and do not simply copy sections out of the course readings.
Question 1 Intertextuality is an important concept in discourse analysis. It comes from the Latin word intertexto meaning to intermingle while weaving’. Define intertextuality more fully and give examples from two different text types.
Question 2 Although there might be many words written on a page, there is much that is left ‘unsaid’ in language, yet we can still understand a text’s meaning. Define presupposition and implicature, and discuss how they are different. Give examples wherever appropriate.
Question 3 There are many rhetorical devices available to writers/speakers which are often used for persuasive writing/speaking. Select any two such devices and discuss their functions and effectiveness in the light of two different text types.
Question 4 An important concept in translation theory is equivalence. Discuss why it is sometimes difficult or even impossible to achieve equivalence. Give examples wherever appropriate and avoid using examples provided in the course materials. LANG A332 Stylistics and Discourse Analysis Assignment
