Assignment: This assignment will be done in steps and parts.
- Step 1: Choose a stage of development that you would like to learn more about through research.
- Step 2: Choose a specific concept from that life stage to focus on. You will then complete a research paper on that lifespan concept. Your project will explore the psychological, physiological, or social challenges and opportunities experienced by people in this life stage, based on your specific chosen concept. In addition to the introduction paragraph (with the thesis) and the conclusion paragraph, the research paper will have three parts.
- Part 1: Summary – This part of the essay will include relevant background information about your concept and how it relates to the life stage it is part of. Using specific examples and statistics, this section will tell the reader all he or she needs to know to understand the concept and who it affects. This section will include at least one body paragraph, but you may find you need more. Some questions to think about might be (these are a starting point, not a requirement; do not organize this section around these questions): what are the main challenges and opportunities in this life stage and how does your concept relate to them? What key psychological definitions are necessary to understand your concept? What are the physiological, psychological, and social aspects that affect your concept?
- Part 2: Current Trends – This part of the essay will include information about current research being done on your lifespan concept. Psychologists are always working on new ways to understand human development better. For this section, you will need to cite a current article (written within the last five years) relating to your chosen topic. Then, you will write at least one body paragraph to 1) explain what the psychologists who wrote the article discovered (summarize the research) and 2) explain how the research in the article improves on or changes past knowledge of the lifespan concept (analyze the importance of the research). - Part 3: Cultural Comparison – This part of the essay will include information about how a culture other than mainstream American culture views the lifespan concept. Describe the concept that you chose to explore in a country other than the United States or in a different American or international subculture and compare it to the trends in the United States. Your goal will be to examine the challenges, opportunities, and expectations for people in a culture other than the mainstream US culture, how cultural norms and values impact the ways in which human development is addressed in different countries. This section will include at least one body paragraph.
- Step 3: You will combine the parts of the essay into a single essay and turn it in on Canvas. Depending on how much information you have to give your reader, some sections may include more than one paragraph. Don’t forget to add transitions between paragraphs to make the essay flow for the reader.
- Step 4: You will briefly present your research in front of the class in psychology.
Sources: Since this is a research assignment, you will need to include specific quotations from sources in your essay. Each part of the essay should reference at least one source, with a minimum requirement of three sources. You may use additional sources.
Audience: Your assumed target audience is not very familiar with the specifics of lifespan psychology, so in Part 1, you will need to define your concept and explain what it is, how it works, and how it affects people with specific examples from your source.
Tips:
- Labeling the sections will make the progression of the essay easier to understand for your reader, but it is not required.
Essay Expectations:
- A clearly stated, specific, straightforward thesis.
- The thesis will need to include your topic—i.e. your lifespan concept—and give the reader a sense of the progression of the essay.
- An organized structure in which key points are grouped with their supporting examples.
- Body paragraphs will need to include topic sentences, specific evidence, and analysis to explain the relevance of the evidence. Each paragraph will need to stay focused on its topic.
- Specific, detailed examples to support the thesis and subtopics.
- These examples will come from your sources.
- Analysis, not just description.
- Once you have provided an example, you will need to explain to your reader how that example proves your point, why it is important, how it relates to the main topic, or why you chose that example in particular.
- Clear, readable, precise prose.
- Please edit your final draft to get rid of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, as well as awkward sentences.
- Academic style.
- This essay should analyze and explain the topic, using your sources as evidence. It should not include personal examples. It should not include personal pronouns like “I” and “you,” slang, or informal language.
Requirements:
- Formatting: Your essay should be in APA format:
- Double-spaced.
- Times New Roman 12 point font.
- 1-inch margins on all sides.
- A header on the top left including a shortened version of the title in ALL CAPS.
- Page numbers on the top right.
- The first page is the title page. It will include the title, your name, and the institution’s name, all centered on the page.
- The second page is the abstract, a summary of the finished essay.
- The essay starts on the third page with a repetition of the title.
