#1 : Are there things you wanted out of it (college) that have not yet happened? Have I been pushed? Have I pushed myself? Have I learned all that I wanted to learn? What will it take to accomplish this goal before you graduate?
#2 You can apply the strategic management process to your own career
- Goals and Objectives
-What am I trying to accomplish? (e.g get a job, go to grad school, start a business, etc.)
- Analyze the external and internal environments
-For example, do I stay in South Florida (service based economy) or move?
-Or, what are my personal skills and capabilities?
- Formulate an appropriate business and corporate strategy.
-Where would these skills be best used?
- Implement the formulated strategy through structure, culture, and controls.
-Find a job that will allow me to achieve my goals.
#3 Write down the name of an entrepreneur that you admire.
Questions to answer:
- Write down key characteristics that define them as a leader.
- What is the chronology of events that took that person to a position of leadership?
- How did the events of that person’s life affect their ultimate leadership self?
- How did these qualities impact their business?
- What lessons can you apply to your own life?
#4 Write at least 3 PERSONAL goals that you think are essential to your success. After you decide on your goals, list the objectives you must meet in order to achieve your goals.
- Please list your goals, then at least two objectives you must reach to achieve each of your goals. Remember, objectives are quantifiable.
#5 – List 5 resources you possess (business related)
- List 3 abilities
- List 2 core competencies you will bring to a business career.
- Share how your core competencies provide competitive advantage in the job market and will provide competitive advantage in your first job.
#6 Since today we talked about “political force,†part of being an adult is voting. Answer the following:
- Are you registered?
- If for some reason you cannot register(e.g. Not a citizen), are you registered in your home country?
- Where (specifically) is your polling place?
- If not local, have you requested a vote-by-mail ballot?
- Have you ever voted in a municipal (i.e. a local, city) election? Why not?
- Why is it important that you vote?
- Who are you going to bring with you to vote?
#7 Are you personally a low cost leader? Hopefully not! Hopefully, you are a differentiator that can charge a premium salary for your uniqueness!
In preparation for interviews, please write down good answers to the following questions.
- Tell me about yourself (Have a very brief autobiography prepared about yourself, 30-60 second speech)
- Why do you want this job?
- Why should we hire you?
- What are your greatest professional strengths?
- What do you consider to be your weaknesses?
- Tell me about the time you overcame a struggle.
- Do you have any questions for me (they will always ask this, so have a generic question prepared so you are left hanging at the end).

- What did they build, borrow, and buy?
- Identify competencies that are being leveraged across businesses.
- Identify economies of sale.
- Identify economies of scope.
- Identify financial economies.
#9 Personal “outsourcing†and diversification
- We choose how we spend our time & energy
- Example: school, work, family, sleep, play
- Can be thought of as personal diversification
- Be sure to:
- List your major activity areas
- List the percentage of time you spend doing them
- Assess your degree of related and unrelatedness
- What do you “outsourceâ€
- What conclusions do you derive?
- Should you make adjustments?
- Has/ should this change over time?

- What is an appropriate definition of a U.S. firm?
- What considerations should a firm have for its home country?
- What about web-based companies (e.g. Facebook)? They were founded in the U.S. and have millions of American users, but are global in reach.
- Who should regulate these companies? Whose rules should they follow? To whom should they pay taxes?
