Are there double or hidden meanings in the lyrics? What other motivations (political, racial, religious) exist in the lyrics?
Separate the music from the lyrics. How would the piece have turned out if it were a poem instead of a song? How has the music changed the song’s identity?
Try to find another version of the song with different music or different lyrics. How does different music or words change the song?
What emotions did the song mean to elicit? Does the song still provoke those emotions?
Write at least 400 words on the meaning of the song, stressing the information listed in the prompts above. In particular, pay attention to the song’s thesis, or “big ideas” and make sure your interpretation is not just a re-hashing of the lyrics.
Save the document as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file.
Turn it in.
