NUR 370 Health Policy Analysis Paper
You will be responsible for writing a 5-6-page paper (excluding title page and reference page, which are required) that analyzes a national health problem being addressed in the policy arena. A good source for what is happening in congress is http://thomas.loc.gov/. Use the word/search to find out about policy solutions being discussed on your topic.
The paper must include:
- Definition of the problem being addressed at the National level: include the nature and severity of the problem, indicators, and consequences, including prevalence, trends (i.e. differentiation by ethnicity, state, etc.), causes and contributing factors to the problem, rationale for government intervention (describe why it is a public problem) (1-2 pages)
- Solution: Describe the pending or recently adopted legislation. Include each of the following:
- An analysis of effectiveness – to what extent does this solve the problem?
- Cost (cite research-based sources that estimate what it would cost per capita, spending needed for one or multiple years),
- Social justice
- Administrative burden (paperwork, privacy invasion, etc.),
- Interest groups likely to be for and against the solution
- Conclusion: A well-written conclusion that summarizes your policy problem and the preferred solution with key rationale.
Avoid direct quotes unless absolutely necessary (e.g. a definition). The paper should be in APA format (see references in course documents for more information regarding APA).
Use section headings to organize your paper (See 1,2 and 3 above). Use 12-point font with 1-inch margins. The following websites may help you identify solutions: http://healthreform.kff.org/ and http://thomas.loc.gov/. Look for reputable sources, such as interest group or professional association web sites that result from using the key words for your search to see what solutions they propose and/ or what concerns they may have. This also gives you insight into whether or not the legislation is likely to pass or, if already pass, be implemented successfully.
