Phil 1301 Class Discussion: Science & Religion
As we have learned in class, Descartes lived in a time when much of science and medicine was based on superstition and religious tradition.
Moreover, we now live in an age where much debate exists about to which degree religious beliefs should influence modern science and laws.
For example, people argue that religion, religious books and religious tradition should influence laws and human rights concerning abortion, euthanasia, vaccines, etc.
(1) In 500-800 words, give your opinion about whether or not religious beliefs should influence science and laws. If not, explain why… If so, explain to what degree religious beliefs should influence science, ethics and laws. Is there a way to compromise between the two without encroaching on basic human rights. How does the phrase, “separation of church and state” apply to this debate? Use real-life examples and address at least one of the topics mentioned above (abortion, euthanasia, vaccines, etc.)
