Assignment Objectives:
You will use this template to write thesis statement an opening paragraph to your research paper (even though you won’t be writing up the rest of the paper.
Before you get to the actual template, the following writing skill sections (Section 1-2) will guide you through the process of writing a strong opening paragraph.

SECTION 1: Introduction to a Thesis Statement:
Your 1-sentence thesis must have political problem and a political solution to that problem. In other words, your 1-sentence thesis statement should have 2 parts: (1) a POLITICAL PROBLEM clause and (2) a POLITICAL SOLUTION clause.
- The POLITICAL PROBLEM clause summarizes your political problem.
- The POLITICAL SOLUTION clause contains your proposed solution and how it will solve your political problem.
Political Problem Example 1:
- POLITICAL PROBLEM clause=Uncontrolled campaign spending is distorting elections and favoring candidates who can raise the most money from large interest groups and corporations.
- POLITICAL SOLUTION clause=Congress must provide and require all federal officeholders to use public finding.
- Thesis= Congress must provide and require all federal officeholders to use public finding to prevent the continued corrosion of our election system to moneyed interests instead of American citizens.
Political Problem Example 2: Social Security program funding deficits
- POLITICAL PROBLEM clause=Social security program will run out of money in coming years.
- POLITICAL SOLUTION clause= Social security reform should include raising the retirement age and reducing benefits for wealthier retirees
- Thesis= Congress, using their power of the purse must raise the retirement age and reduce benefits for wealthier retirees so future generations will benefit from the social security program.
What a thesis is NOT:
- A thesis is never a purpose statement
- A purpose statement announces the purpose, scope, and direction of the paper. It tells the reader what to expect in a paper and what the specific focus will be.
- Common beginnings of a purpose statement include:
- “This paper examines …,” “The aim of this paper is to …,” and “The purpose of this essay is to…”
- A thesis is never a question.
- A thesis is never a catch all laundry list of reasons for your opinion.
- A thesis is never vague.
- A thesis is never just opinion.
- A thesis is never more than 1 sentence (at least for this paper).
- A thesis is never an obvious fact.
- A purpose statement announces the purpose, scope, and direction of the paper. It tells the reader what to expect in a paper and what the specific focus will be.

SECTION 2: Introduction Template
- Introduction section (minimum ½ a page, maximum 1 double spaced page)
- Open with a startling statistic or narrative that illustrates the seriousness of your political problem.
- Describe your political problem in 2-3 sentences.
- Make sure to tell the reader who (what groups or what parts of the American population) is being impacted by this political problem.
- Make sure to tell the reader whether this is a local, state, or national problem.
- In 2-3 sentences, explain why should the reader should care about your political problem? Why is your problem important?
- Give the reader some evidence that illustrates the scale and scope of the problem.
- For example how long has this been happening?
- What are the effects this problem on the groups or population you mention?
- In 2-3 sentences, introduce your political solution and the political actor who will be implementing your solution.
- Name the specific actor or actors: Congress, the President, the mayor, the governor, the Supreme Court, etc.
- Tell the reader what power they have over your problem/solution
- Put your thesis statement as the last sentence in your opening paragraph. Your thesis will argue why your solution is “correct”. Do NOT copy the exact phrasing of the example thesis statements.
