PSCY 510 DISCUSSION BOARD PROMPT: ETHICAL DILEMMAS PROMPT: READING RESEARCH

DISCUSSION BOARD #1 PROMPT: ETHICAL DILEMMAS

Required Reading for DB1:

Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. (2017). American Psychological Association. (Required sections: Preamble, General Principles, Section 3.10, and all of Section 8: Research and Publication)

You have learned the federal ethical guidelines regarding research in your CITI course training as well as the ethical standards set forth by the American Psychological Association in week 1 of this course. However, your personal ethics and worldview also shape how you interpret the standards in our field. In complex real-life scenarios, professionals may differentially weigh threats to our professional ethics code that result in various outcomes. The following scenarios are meant to help you develop and reflect on how you would choose to act in a professional research-related ethical dilemma. Note: the following scenarios were modified from a publication written by Hammersley and Traianou (2012) for the British Educational Research Association.

  • A researcher wanted to investigate racist hiring practices but believes that only by disguising the focus of inquiry will access be granted. Would the researcher be justified in doing so?
  • When studying educational challenges when working with special needs students, a researcher is faced by a young adult with severe learning difficulties who demands to be included in the research project along with fellow members of the class, even though her parents have already refused on her behalf. The young adult is 18 years old. What should be the researcher’s response?
  • In writing up the results on a study of three local preschool nurseries, a researcher realizes that the analysis is likely to be interpreted by parents and the local media as suggesting that one of these nurseries is far inferior. However, there were several beneficial aspects of that nursery not quantified as part of the initial study, and that information is not available from the other two nurseries to analyze. Should the researcher proceed to publish the findings, knowing it may be catastrophic to that nursery?
  • During the course of investigating induction processes in a military training establishment, a researcher witnesses what felt to be severe bullying of a new recruit by two of the staff. The researcher documents what occurred, interviews the people involved, and discusses the incident at length in the thesis published two years later. Looking back, the researcher wonders if s/he should have intervened at the time to try to stop it, knowing it would have jeopardized the integrity of the research. The researcher is now planning a follow-up study as part of a dissertation.

Choose one of the scenarios for your discussion board thread to address as if you were a graduate student currently in that situation. Write a professional letter to your graduate research advisor discussing the hypothetical situation (scenario) and how you think it should be handled. Make sure to include the following:

  • A professional salutation and tone throughout the letter.
  • Briefly describe the scenario and how you think it should be handled.
  • Cite at least one ethical standard from the APA Code of Conduct (using both the number and its title – for instance 1.01 Misuse of Psychologists’ Work). Discuss its relevance specifically as it relates to your situation and your chosen response.
  • State the name of the principle from the APA Code of Ethics you believe is most at risk in your selected scenario and if applicable, the federal principle most affected (from the Belmont Report). Discuss your rationale.
  • Include citations throughout your letter and a complete reference section at the end of your letter using current APA style format.

You must reply to two other student’s posts by Sunday at midnight (ET). Each reply must include the following:

  • Respond as if you were the research advisor for the graduate student seeking advice. Do you have any personal or professional concerns about how they plan to handle the situation? Why or why not? (Feel free to cite the APA Ethics Code, Federal regulations, and/or the Bible).
  • Identify at least one ethical standard and/or principle not addressed in the original post and discuss why it may be relevant to the situation. Cite it within your reply.
  • Include a complete reference section at the end of your reply using current APA style format.

Important Considerations:

  • All posts should be professional and respectful.
  • Because this is an interactive graduate level assignment with word minimums, this discussion board prompt leaves no room for comments such as the following, which will result in loss of points:
    • “Great job on your discussion post,”
    • “I totally agree with everything you said,”
    • “Good luck in the rest of the class,” etc.
  • The word count may not include text from this prompt or quotes from any source (put information into your own words). Note direct quotes from classmates’ posts also do not count towards your word minimum. If you include this type of material, make sure that you have enough words to reach the minimum word count without it.

Your thread must be at least 400 words and is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 3. Your two replies must be 200 words each and are due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 3.

DISCUSSION BOARD #2 PROMPT: READING RESEARCH

Preliminary Reading:you will need to locate two empirical articles using the Jerry Falwell Library. You may need to log in to have complete access. https://www.liberty.edu/library/

Thread Prompt:Research is how a field advances its practices, particularly in applied psychology. This discussion board will allow you to explore the practicality of reading research and applying it to your area of interest within psychology. If there is a specific end goal or area of interest you want to pursue with this degree, use that as inspiration. Else, you can pick one of the topics provided below or come up with one of your own. (It helps to have at least twokey terms when searching for a relevant article – but you may want to refine your focus even more. For instance, you can focus on a specific age group, gender, geographic region, religious group, or occupation.)

  • Friendships in the workplace on productivity or job satisfaction
  • Comparison of job / relationship / educational satisfaction among groups (e.g., gender, religion, political view, et cet)
  • PTSD and life or job satisfaction
  • Stress, anxiety, or motivation and academic performance
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (or ADHD, anxiety, et cet) and friendship
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (or ADHD, anxiety, et cet) and education
  • Religious views and workplace conflict

  1. Pick a topic containing at least TWO key terms, like the topics suggested above.
  2. Use the Jerry Falwell Library to locate two articles from peer-reviewed journals containing both key terms.
    1. Try to only use research published within the last year (but definitely limit to within the last 5 years).
    2. Both articles must be from peer-reviewed sources and must be empirical to complete this assignment (remember from week 1, an empirical article is an original research study so it will have method and results sections).
    3. Read the articles.
  3. Write a professional letter to a potential colleague to make him or her aware of these recent findings.
    1. For each article, state the research question, sample size, variables of interest, statistical test used to examine the research question(s), and the conclusions. Make sure to cite in-text using APA conventions. Note you cannot quote – you must put information into your own words for this entire DB thread.
    2. Discuss how the articles work together to strengthen your understanding of the topic you’ve selected personally and/or professionally, OR why you think their results are contradictory.
  4. Include a reference section at the end in current APA style for all citations.

You must reply to two other student’s posts by Sunday at midnight (ET). Each reply must include the following:

  • Reply to your colleague’s letter by suggesting a related study you could complete together.
    1. Clearly state how it would replicate, extend, or refine the results from one or both of the reviewed articles.
    2. Identify and operationally define the variables of interest in your proposed study.
  • If you including any citations, make sure to include a complete reference section at the end of your reply using current APA style format.

Your thread must be at least 400 words and is due by11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 7. Your two replies must be 200 words each and are due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 7.
