Overview
This assignment involves applying your knowledge based on supplementary resources and some lecture material to answer questions regarding a case study. Please read through the story below and answer the subsequent questions. I hope that you find it an interesting assignment and a chance to apply some knowledge from the course so far and to learn about substances and systems that go beyond areas that we cover during class (see source info below).
Please number your responses to indicate their corresponding question. Your answers only need to be brief, but should be sufficient to both answer the question and explain your reasoning/answer. Marks will reflect the correct content of your responses as well as your ability to clearly answer the questions and demonstrate comprehension and scholarship. If you have any questions, please ask, preferentially via a post to the class D2L discussion board or during a class Zoom meeting to ensure that everyone is ‘on the same page’. ‘Horton and the Sisters Three ’
In the meantime, Cindy-Lou had received her next injection and was now awake and alert. As the sisters reunited, Yertle started to recall some things from earlier on in his psychopharmacology class…something about some form of tolerance and salivating dogs…but these weren’t quite the same things… “Aha!” exclaimed Yertle as he turned to share his understanding of the events with the three sisters.
Answer the following questions and see if you can help Yertle complete this story!
Questions
- Do you think the sisters’ story and Cindy-Lou’s symptoms are more consistent with heroin or caffeine toxicity? Explain your rationale using at least 3 pieces of evidence/ examples from the case story. (5 pts)
- What types of receptors are most implicated in the effects of heroin and caffeine? How do these drugs act on these receptors (i.e., agonist, partial agonist, antagonist)? (4 pts)
- What drug (or kind) would have relieved such serious symptoms in Cindy-Lou so quickly? Explain whether/how this fits with details in the story. (3 pts)
- What form of tolerance was Yertle likely remembering? Consider how this form of tolerance might be relevant in this particular That is, finish the story with how you think Yertle might explain to the sisters that Cindy- Lou did in fact overdose, when neither Mayzie nor Sally did, despite their similar drug-use history and their same use of the drug that night. That is, role-play to explain as if you are Yertle in context of the case and provide supporting examples from the story. (5 pts)
- Why do you think Yertle suspects the energy drinks were the root of Horton’s condition? Similar to Q4, explain your rationale as if you are Yertle to help complete this aspect of the story. Incorporate at least 3 pieces of evidence/ examples from the case story to support your explanation. (5 pts)
- Beyond the information discussed in your responses to Qs1-5, what else did you learn related to psychopharmacology in your research for this assignment that you found of interest? Explain one aspect that you learned and why you found it of interest. (3 pts)
