The Effect Of War On Disadvantaged Groups/Minorities
[ad_1]
OVERVIEW
The final project is designed to measure your ability to analyze and synthesize historical evidence related to a historical theme. You are required to write a thesis paper in which you formulate a thesis and support it with specific and relevant historical evidence.
INSTRUCTIONS
Choose one of the following as the central theme for your paper:
- The effect of war on disadvantaged groups/minorities: The United States has provided opportunities for women and/or racial and ethnic groups during conflict and post-conflict. However, war has also limited opportunities for those same groups.
- National security in a time of crisis: When attacks have occurred, the U.S. government has taken steps to secure the nation and (has) made attempts to prevent future attacks. Many of the measures, however, have been criticized as extreme and even unconstitutional.
- The development of global politics: Since wars have become global, so have the policies and decisions surrounding them. Starting in the twentieth century, the involvement of world nations in wars has expanded. Ultimately, this has made conflicts more global in nature, resulting in questionable U.S. foreign policy.
- Isolationism vs. interventionism: After the U.S. established itself and secured its government, it became a world power at the turn of the twentieth century. However, being part of global trade and political matters also has meant involvement in global conflicts. Since the Cold War, the U.S. has attempted to preserve its security by intervening in conflicts under the banner of democracy and freedom. Some have criticized U.S. actions as self-serving and unreasonably extreme.
Then, consider the following questions to help structure, articulate, and support your argument for the theme you have chosen. Keep in mind, your paper should reflect the United States’ history of war from the Second World War to the present day.
- How has the American experience of war changed over the course of these conflicts?
- What philosophical or moral issues were raised by these conflicts?
- What were the main political, social, economic, and/or intellectual trends during the individual wars, and did those trends continue through the other conflicts?
- How have these wars at once affected and reflected the social attitudes and values of American society? Have the attitudes and values changed during these conflicts?
REQUIREMENTS
The paper must be 3,000-3,750 words (12-15 pages, double-spaced) in length with one-inch margins, and a 12-point standard font (such as Arial or Times New Roman). The paper should include readings from the course and at least five additional primary sources to defend your argument.
