Individual Inquiry Project: You will conduct an individual inquiry project to probe the depths of what you have learned in relate to the expected learning outcomes of the Literature GE goals. You will explore a topic of your choice in detail and write a 5-7 page paper to demonstrate your understanding of the major concepts covered in class.
Part One
ELO #1: You will evaluate significant literary texts. Your paper must include an analysis, interpretation, and critique of a small collection of children’s literature (3 picture books, 1 chapter book, or a combination of both). Give specific examples from the texts to illustrate and support your evaluation.
Part Two
ELO #2: You will appraise and evaluate the personal and social values of your own and other cultures. Your paper must include a thematic exploration in response ot the novels you evaluated in part one. Consider the essential question that guides this course: How does children’s literature represent and convey ideology, enabling us to contemplate our own lives, as well as the diverse and complex world in which we live? Identify one aspect of ideology explored across your text set, and explore the theme through the lens of your own personal and social values and those of other cultures. In light of this essential question, topics focused on aspects of diversity are especially relevant to this inquiry project.
While there can be a focus on child development in your essay, this is a children’s literature class so I want the primary focus to be on the children’s literature and your analysis. Maybe reframing your question to something like: “How does children’s literature show the positive impacts of community, etc. on a child’s development…?” would be helpful.
