· Introduction and research motivation:
Why is the research or problem an important one for the client to investigate?
· Research question(s):
These can be provisionally stated as they may change during the research process. They may be stated as questions or hypotheses. This depends on the particular methodological approach chosen by the researcher and the topic.
· Indicative Literature Review:
This should outline previous academic work to date. It should be a statement about the gaps that your research will fill or why particular problems merit investigation. In reviewing the literature, it is useful to look for contradictions and paradoxes. These usually suggest that there is an interesting research question which could be addressed. You will need to cite well known and authoritative material (from academically robust sources), critically reviewing the findings, implications and conclusions from previous work. It should have a logical flow and have headings (and subheadings if appropriate).
· Proposed Research Design:
A brief indication of how the research will be carried out including information on your population and sampling strategy and methods you will use and why. There should be a very clear link between the methods you describe in this section and the objectives you have previously defined. Be explicit in your writing and state exactly how the methods you have chosen will fulfil your objectives. Think about why these methods will achieve these over other possible research approaches: in particular, the ‘validity’ and ‘reliability’ of the methods chosen.
· Proposed Research Instruments: Discuss the research instruments that will be used and provide a sample research instrument appropriate to your research design e.g. survey instrument, interview schedule, focus group guide.
