As stated in the syllabus, a research project is required for graduate students to explore advanced topics related to construction support operations. The project deliverables will include a detailed report. Students will need to examine more advanced materials than those covered in the course.
Topic Selection:
For this project, you may choose any topic related to construction that interests you. The main goal of the project is for you to research and evaluate your topic and its relationship with construction safety, quality, and productivity. An important consideration for the topic you select for the research project is that it must have sufficient background information. Some topics may be so new that there is little research and literature currently available. Also, keep in mind that there might be numerous reference materials available for one part, such as safety, but there may be fewer references for another part, such as productivity; this is acceptable as long as there is at least ONE reference related to your topic for each part (safety, quality, and productivity). Before selecting a topic, it is recommended that each student conduct a cursory literature review on a potential topic.
Below are some potential topic ideas for the research project:
- Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)
- Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) (Focus on this one)
- 4D/5D modelling
- RFID technology
Note: While this course is focused more on labor productivity, topics and their relationship with construction equipment productivity will also be accepted.
Research Report:
The research report that you prepare as part of the research project is expected to be five pages in length (at a minimum). The report should be prepared using 12 pt. font and should be double spaced with one-inch margins on all sides of the page. The report must include the following sections:
- Cover sheet*
- Introduction (one page maximum)
- Relationship that your topic has with construction safety, quality, and productivity
- Literature review
- Discussion
- Conclusion (one page maximum)
- Future research needs
- References (minimum of four total references)*
*Not included in total page count of the report.
Section 2 is the introduction for the report. In this section each student should briefly introduce their topic. This section should include basic information such as what your topic is, how it is used in the construction industry, etc.
Section 3 listed above should form the main part of the report and should detail how your topic relates to construction safety, quality, and productivity in their respective section. This section should contain a review of literature and research conducted on your topic. The discussion portion in Section 3 will require you to think critically about the knowledge that you gained from the literature review and how your topic relates to safety, quality, and productivity. This should include, at a minimum, a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages that your topic has in relation to safety, quality, and productivity.
Section 6 contains the conclusion for your report. A portion of the conclusion should be dedicated to future research needs you feel are warranted related to your topic and construction safety, quality, and productivity.
All information and references used in the report must come from credible sources. This includes books, peer reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical reports, and theses/dissertations. If you would like to include information from webpages and other online material in your report, you must receive approval by the instructor. Please email the links pertaining to the webpages and/or other online materials to the instructor. Once credibility is determined, you will be permitted to use information found on the site and count the site as a reference in your report. Citation within the text and the references page should follow the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) style. Please see the PDF titled “Publishing in ASCE Journals” for more guidance.
