Nurses then and now goals are the same, to take care of the sick and provide the best care possible to treat them. The first nurse that comes to mind is Florence Nightingale, a pioneer that helps mold into what a nurse is now. It was during the Crimean War (1854-1856) when it all started. Nightingale and her nurses made a researched that by improving the soldiers’ environment, the death toll has drastically decreased. The death rates from infections were almost nonexistent after implementing Nightingale’s environmental change (Cohen, 1984). Her experiences during the war prompted her to write her book, Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not, which was published in 1859. In addition to the book, she founded the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860 in London, England. These training schools provided basic nursing education and instruction (Cohen,1984). Aside from Florence Nightingale, the following are the leaders who also made a contribution in the advancement of nursing, education, and roles that are now part of the contemporary nursing profession:Lilian Wald (1867-1940). A nursing pioneer who helped to found the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and the Henry Street Settlement House in 1893.Mary Brewster. Friend and colleague of Lilian Wald who assisted in opening the Henry Street Settlement House in 1893 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NY.Lina Rogers. Named the first school nurse in the United States in New York City.Clara Barton. (1821-1912) A nursing pioneer who founded the American Red Cross.Jane Delano (1862-1919) Nurse who founded the American Red Cross Nursing Service.Linda Richards (1841-1930) The First professionally trained American nurse.Mildred Montag.
