UNITED STATES HISTORY II ONLINE
FINAL EXAMINATION

Technical Requirements: Three (3) to four (4) pages, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, one (1)-inch margins. These requirements, including the page limit, will be strictly enforced, and non-conforming essays risk receiving the grade of “F” on this assignment.

Assignment: In the research paper, when writing about Mary Dudziak’s Cold War Civil Rights, several students ignored the Cold War and wrote only about the civil rights movement. This assignment is intended to return your focus to the Cold War and its aftermath. You should write an essay about six (6)-paragraphs in length responding to the issues set forth below. Please organize your thoughts, the facts, analysis, and discussion very carefully.

The Cold War was a great fact of American life from 1945 until about 1991. After an introduction that states a good, clear thesis, in about one fact-based paragraph, describe how the Cold War emerged between 1945 and 1947 from the Grand Alliance of World War II. Then, in another paragraph, examine the Cold War at its height in the 1960s: In particular, after the immediate threat of nuclear war abated with a resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, why did the Vietnam War expand in southeast Asia and cost over 55,000 Americans lives? Next, what, if anything, did the United States do in the 1980s to hasten the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, which signaled the end of the Cold War? Finally, although Give Me Liberty! only reaches 2015, you may briefly look at the tension between the U.S. and Russia today. Are we living through a new cold war? To conclude, write a few sentences bringing together your main ideas about events in U.S. relations with the Soviet Union and Russia between 1945 and about 2015.

The best essays will demonstrate an understanding of assignments in Give Me Liberty! and Cold War Civil Rights. No other sources may be used.

Citations & Sources: Quotations should be kept to a minimum, but, when necessary, quotes should be followed by a simple MLA-style in-text citation: e.g., (Foner, Give Me Liberty!, 840). Whenever possible, paraphrase documents and other texts to demonstrate your understanding of what you read. To reiterate, this is not a research assignment, and students may not use any sources other than the assigned texts.

Grading Criteria: (1) Insight into the issues in the assignment; (2) Reading of assigned texts; and (3) Style in presenting facts and in analyzing and discussing them. Pursuant to the syllabus, this essay will constitute Twenty Percent (20%) of the final grade for the course.
