What leadership qualities do you believe are necessary for effective administration in correctional agencies, and do you think they are different than those needed by leaders in the court system? Briefly explain your rationale.

I believe that respect and communication are the most important qualities a leader can have for effective administration in correctional agencies. If a correctional facility, the officers should have each other’s back and for that to happen whether you are the top or bottom person, everyone must respect each other. I feel that if you don’t respect your leadership then chances are you also do not trust that person. Not trusting your counterparts in a job like corrections can be a very dangerous setup. I do not think that it matters what profession you are in; communication is key for anyone in leadership. You should be able to communicate what is needed and expected of your staff as well as communicate that they can come to you for anything they may need. In a court system, I believe that the most important leadership quality is integrity. In the court system, you have other individual’s lives in your hands and in a position as such, a leader should be one who is going to do the right thing even when they are not being watched.
